“Italians generally did not use surnames until the Italian population began to grow, so more families needed to be distinguished from each other. In the fifteenth century, Italians in the upper classes began to add a surname.
At the time of the Council of Trent using a surname was a common practice and even more solidified by that council when they emphasized the need to record baptisms, marriages, and burials.
Understanding the meaning and origin of your surname can help you not only distinguish between families from finding an exact place of the same name, but in Italy could [also] be a key to finding an exact place of origin for your ancestors. Why? Because certain surnames exist only in certain localities in Italy or are more common in specific regions of the country.”
